My personal pack is great. Often, they're the envy of onlookers. "So well behaved!" or "Wow, I wish my dog could do that!" Even on their worst days, they're still better than the average dog on its best day. We've worked long and hard, countless hours, day in, and day out to achieve those compliments. Does that make my dogs "perfect?" Nope! I don't want perfect robots. I want organic personalities who make good choices while understanding accountability. It's up to me to be their mentor and lead them in the right direction.
What do we struggle with?
An opportunistic German Shepherd who steals bread. An overly friendly and on occasion reactive Golden Retriever. A socially awkward, fearful, but hyperactive Mutt.
And why am I sharing these so-called flaws? Because I can relate! I know what's it's like to go through some of the same obstacles many owners experience. I can understand and appreciate from a personal level. While having go to strategies, I continue to expand my wheelhouse to allow myself different perspectives to meet challenges from all angles.
My training journey isn't over yet, just because I am a professional dog trainer, and my dogs are good. Every day we continue to learn, to grow, to evolve. Progress over perfection. It's been said "Happiness is a journey, not a destination." Let me lead you and your dog on your journey.
My first dog as an adult on my own was brown like coffee, with hints of cream around her eyes and legs. She was smart, stubborn, sassy, and a whole lot of crazy. 55 pounds of Alsakan Malamute and Rottweiler, she was my KONA LOCA.
It's because of Kona I found a love for training dogs. She knew her basics, but many years ago I definitely didn't know what I know now. Between two cross country moves, focusing on work in a bustling doggie daycare, training became a passenger on life’s ride. When I got back into my groove, unfortunately it was too late. Kona had lost a swift battle to bone cancer at 8 years young. I felt I had done a disservice to the dog she could have been. If only we had a little more time. So, in her honor and memory we are KONA LOCA TRANING.
🐾I am Christienne Glick. Military spouse, boy mama, animal lover- especially dogs.
🐾Born and raised in SoCal. Spent a few years in a small midwestern Ohio town, before coming home.
🐾15 years in the animal care industry. Volunteered at shelters and rescues; CGSR, Toledo Humane Society. Learned various training methods and interned in Ohio to get my start in training. 6 years as an assistant manager and room attendant for a Dogtopia, a busy doggie daycare. Lead trainer for 7 years with one of the top training companies in California, Off Leash K9 Training, before taking a leap and becoming owner/trainer of Kona Loca Training. After nearly 270 Board and train programs, working a doggie a daycare, and volunteering, I have met hundreds of different doggie personalities.
Bert comes to Kona Loca Training as a veteran trainer. With 6 years under his belt, he previously worked alongside Christienne at Off Leash K9 then had a hand in training at TMWD.
“I got into training professionally because when we trained our GSD, Nala, I saw how she had transformed; I really wanted to do that myself and to be able to offer that to others. Having that awesome dog that could go places and be reliable was something I never had, and didn’t realize was possible until we had so easily done it ourselves. I like to be able to help people to have the dog they have always wanted.” - Bert

Ivy’s transformation after 3 weeks!
Dogs don’t generalize, they need exposure to more; more places, sounds, smells, sights, people, dogs, etc. Training in a “box store” is great for socializing or learning fundamentals at an early stage like puppyhood. In the long run, it’s not conducive for most owner’s training goals. Inside 4 walls doesn’t allow enough exposure to new and exciting or sometimes even startling things. KLT utilizes practical application of our training to best teach your pup how to cope and comply with the unknowns of the real world!
Once your dog starts to have an understanding of commands we take frequent field trips to meet the level of distractions needed to proof their training! Starting with parks, we work our way up and through various levels of distractions.
Popular training destinations include:
Seaport Village
Balboa Park
Outlet Malls
Car Shows
Beaches
Parks
Farmer’s Markets
Pet friendly sporting events, stores, restaurants, and more!

Being a dog trainer is a very active job. We’re always working a dog and often unable to respond immediately. Please send or leave a message and I will reply as soon as I am able.
Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.
In our homes! Your pup becomes part of our pack and our families during his/her stay. We for your dog as if it were one of our own. We don’t have a “facility” in order to replicate and create real life scenarios. All dogs are crated when unsupervised and even while riding in the car. Bedding and blankets are encouraged and can be provided for added comfort. They will never be left unattended in the backyard or car. Check out our Dog Room page below these FAQs.
Nope! Intact males and females are welcome. If you do plan on spaying or neutering your dog please schedule several weeks before or after your training dates. Recovery can take 10-14 days. We want your pup feeling their best when coming into training. After training if your pup goes straight into surgery and recovery then they might be a little rusty with their training. Not a worry, schedule a refresher!
If a female goes into her heat cycle right before or during training, her dates will be postponed Until cycle has completed.
My methods and ideologies fall into balanced training. I believe in being fair; firm yet gentle. Rewarding the good choices, but having boundaries and holding a dog accountable for poor ones. My tool of choice is E-collar and method for teaching is through pressure. First through leash pressure work and rewarding with what motivates the dog whether its food, ball, toy, affection. Then pairing and layering the pressure with an e-collar. The e-collar is like a doggie cell phone. When a dog is either mentally or physically checked out I can dial in and connect with the dog.
I train one to two doggos at a time. I prefer to stagger each dog about a week out from the next. This allows each dog to have some one on one training as well as an overlap for more doggie distractions.
Dogs from the same household? I still prefer to stagger them to allow each dog some independence. Same dates can be approved on case-by-case basis.
Think of it like this: your dog and I have worked hard as teammates to get to the Super Bowl. You come in as a rookie without as much experience and practice. You will have to work at finding a routine and chemistry with your pup, just as I have. But you’ll have my playbook and your dog will have a foundation to build off. So while I cannot guarantee that your dog will come back “perfect” or “flawless,” I can guarantee your dog will come back with an understanding of obedience and how to follow through when guided. I also guarantee to coach you on how to achieve the same results I can get with your dog and offer assistance through refreshers after completion.
Aggressive, no. Reactive, yes. Over the years, most of the dogs labeled as aggressive by their owners are actually reactive. Let me explain!
Reactivity and aggression are often confused for one another. Reactive dogs are overreacting to a certain trigger, whether it be out of fear or frustration, and in a state of arousal. First a dog becomes excited and then when that excitement takes over, a dog becomes aroused. Aggressive behaviors typically stem through fear and when that state of arousal has escalated. Both reactivity and aggression are steps to how a dog is trying to communicate. In Layman’s terms, reactivity is a threat and aggression is following through on such a threat. Unfortunately at this time I am not training aggressive dogs or when a dog skips the reactivity step.
While training is a vital part of a dog’s overall health -especially its mental health- your dog’s physical safety takes priority. Safety protocols include crating or kenneling when they cannot be supervised, monitored by camera, in a climate controlled dog room. All dogs in our care will wear a FI gps collar when away from home. We will never jeopardize a dog’s safety and some dogs may need to remain leashed throughout the entirety of their program.
”The Dog Room;” converted guest bedroom. Air conditioned and climate controlled, monitored through cameras. All pups are crated when they cannot be physically supervised. No portable or pop-up wire crates are used; instead heavy duty welded or Ruffland crates. All dogs are also transported riding in a Ruffland to ensure the utmost care and safety even when on the road!

When you think about a “Golden Retriever,” Arlo is exactly what comes to mind. Goofy, loyal, attentive, smart. Arlo initially came to me as a foster and train after living in a one bedroom apartment that the management didn’t know about. Fortunately for me, he was evicted and that’s how we found each other. He had never really been outside or even knew how to “dog.” I love all my pups, but he just may be my HEART dog. He somehow just gets me.
9 year old German Shepherd
My old girl, my ride or die. A birthday gift from my dad, O.C. (“Orange Crush“) was named after our favorite NFL team. She’s smart and sophisticated. Affection is cool, treats are yummy. But ball is life- you’ll likely find her with one in her mouth. I have O.C. to thank for reigniting my love for dog training.
5 year old Golden Retriever/ Aussie
Oh, Cannon. He’s as sweet as can be, probably the most eager to please, but hyperactive and socially awkward. Once he warms up, he’ll have you in stitches with his shenanigans and high powered zoomies!
-Get your dog freshly groomed. Long coats need to be free of mats and tangles.
-Make sure your pup is up to date on flea prevention and vaccines; Bordetella, Dhpp, and Rabies. Heartworm and Canine flu vaccine if advised by veterinary.
Board and train programs are full of routines and structure. Below is a list of things you can do to further help prepare your dog for their upcoming stay. Some changes may seem a little hard, but the changes once your dog comes home will be harder. By implementing the list below, you will set you and your dog up for the most success!
- No free feeding. Give your pup approx 20 minutes for mealtimes. Treats and food are used for training; a dog who free feeds typically doesn't value its food, because it is always available.
- Limit free reign. This is the first big change your dog will experience while at their board and train.
- Introduce a crate or playpen to your dog if your dog isn't crate trained. This will limit free reign, provides safety and structure, aides in potty training and helps elimination of behaviors like unwanted destruction.
